Whakatane & District Historical Society Event
COFFEE AND CHAT — MILK BARS AND COFFEE CAFES IN WHAKATANE 1950’S & 60’S
On June 13 Whakatane & District Historical Society members met at Whakamax for coffee and a chat about early milk bars, coffee bars, tea houses and tea rooms. Many memories were related. The
establishments discussed were as follows:
The Nibble Nook – in the Regent Theatre lobby on The Strand.
Monte Carlo – next to the Regent Theatre. In its later years it was
Americanised with booths and a dukebox.
The Pink Flamingo – originally Savage’s Guest House in George Street. It reputedly had the best coffee in town. Later burnt down. Red Robin – in the Strand near the Grand Theatre (now Park Lane
Arcade).
Wedgewood Reception Lounge – upstairs in the building now occupied by a gym behind the Strand. Later moved to the Strand.
Kingsway Coffee Lounge – in Kopeopeo opposite where PaknSave is now.
Santa Ana Milk Bar – in Boon Street.
Captain’s Cabin – at the bottom of Ohope Hill. Later became the OBR.
The Green Parrot – in Edgecube, later burnt down. Beach Haven Tea Rooms.
Tea rooms at the Heads – name unknown.
