On Sunday over 50 people representing the Whakatane & District Historical Society, local Rotary, St Matthias Church, U3A and other interested parties joined Robert at the cemetery on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

Robert showed us the graves of early Pakeha settlers as well as the graves of the first Maori buried here. The first stop was at the graves of James Fulloon and Te Hurinui Apanui which are next to each other. There are many graves bearing names well known to the Whakatane community.

After the tour Robert was able to help one person sort out her whakapapa and others find their family burial places
