Whakatane & District Historical Society Event

FIELD TRIP TO TE TE TEKO AND KUPENGA

On 17 April 2024 members of the Whakatane Historical Society visited Te Teko to learn about the battle of Te Kupenga.

First we were welcomed onto Tutaeo Marae where we heard korero by Hakahaka Hona about the Marae and its connection to Te Kupenga.

We then visited the building occupied by Tane Mahuta Forests which was the Armed Constabulary building originally situated at Te Kupenga.

We also visited the Te Kupenga battle site on Tahuna Road. The former Armed Constabulary site is where those accused of killing the Rev. Karl Volkner in Opotiki and James Fulloon in Whakatane were arrested.

A fine pou has been erected in commemoration of the
event.
